“I do not like retrospectives. A retrospective sounds like: ‘OK, the artist is probably going to die in three years’ if they are holding a retrospective exhibition now. But I really like its name “The Cleaner” – cleaning the emotions, cleaning the past, looking back from the new perspective… It’s like cleaning up and creating a new reality” - she said in the Serbian Monitor. The exhibition has traveled around many cities and will now end its tour in Belgrade between September 21, 2019 and January 20, 2020. It will be slightly different than before. The city of her youth and the last stop on the way of a traveling exhibition. A place to return to the roots, where she debuted as a young artist. She admitted that coming home would be a great experience for her. It's been many years since Abramovic last performed in Belgrade. Marina has already become a cult figure. Constantly shocking and irritating the audience. Some are her followers, others claim that she has sold, she has become a usurer of art . Regardless of the verdict, it must be admitted that everyone without exception knows her name. As at previous exhibitions, it will be presented her paintings, conceptual works, drawings, objects, photographs, audio works, video installations, solo performances and works created with former professional and personal partner Ulay (Rhythms, 1973-1974; Lips of Thomas, 1975; Relatonal works, 1976-1977; Nightsea Crossing, 1982-1986, Balkan Baroque, 1997; The Artist is Present, 2010). The live segment of the exhibition is presented through the re-performances of Marina Abramović’s historical performances, which will be performed daily by local and international performers. In addition, the exhibition will include works that call for the active participation of the audience. In addition as part of the exhibition, Marina Abramović will hold a public lecture, and a Master Class for young artists. The Serbian exhibition will be important for several reasons. As already mentioned, this is her great return to her homeland as a world-famous artist. For this reason, additional performances are to be presented, which were not on previous exhibitions of "The Cleaner". And secondly, it is a great opportunity to see her for the first time (or again) on home soil. If you don't have any plans for a short getaway, think about a trip to Belgrade.
